Commingled (Mixed) Recycling
Commingled recycling allows for mixed recyclables to be disposed of in one receptacle. Recyclable materials including glass, plastics, metals and aluminium cans and containers make up commingled recycling.
What goes in a commingled bin/receptacle?
- Plastic bottles and containers
- Aluminium cans
- Glass bottles
Do not place the following in a commingled bin/receptacle:
- General waste
- Sanitary waste
- Clinical waste
- Non-recyclable materials
- Waxed paper
What does Veolia do with commingled (mixed) recyclables?
Glass
All separated glass is delivered directly to an approved processing facility. Contaminated glass is delivered to one of our resource recovery facilities for processing. Veolia owns and operates Materials Recovery Facilities in Queensland and Tasmania. Veolia has supply arrangements with a number of glass recycling facilities.
Plastic bottles and containers
Clean plastic bottles and containers can be re-processed at one of Veolia’s materials recovery facilities. Veolia works with it’s customers to recycle as much plastic content as possible. When the materials are received at the facility they go through a combination of manual and mechanical sorting processes. The sorted recyclable materials may undergo further processing, whilst the residual of the mixed waste streams will be sent to a traditional or bioreactor landfill.
Aluminium cans
Veolia Environmental Services collects aluminium cans as part of a mixed recyclables collection and send the materials to a licensed processed facility, or one of its own materials recovery facilities. Recycling scrap aluminium requires only 5% of the energy used to make new aluminium. By its nature, aluminium is one of the only materials that can be continually recycled without loss of quality.
