What is General Waste?

General Waste RecyclingGeneral waste consists of non-hazardous materials which have been discarded and cannot be re-used or recycled. General waste is also known as putrescible or mixed waste.

What goes in a General waste bin/receptacle?

  • Food waste (that cannot be placed in a food organics bin)
  • Wax cardboard
  • Tissue paper
  • Soiled containers

Do not place the following in a General waste bin/receptacle:

  • White office paper
  • Cardboard
  • Cans, and or other recyclable materials
  • Ink cartridges
  • Light globes
  • Medical waste
  • Secure documents

What does Veolia Environmental Services do with general waste?

Veolia Environmental Services collects and disposes of general waste within all states within Australia. Veolia collects general waste materials from businesses, local councils, residential addresses and industrial customers. General waste can be discarded in a variety of bins and receptacles. Once the general waste has been collected, it will be taken to either a conventional landfill or a bioreactor landfill.

What is a conventional landfill?

A conventional landfill is a highly engineered facility that provides capacity for the disposal for general waste. Veolia Environmental Services owns and operates conventional landfills in South Australia, New South Wales and Queensland. These landfills are designed and constructed in open space release of contaminants into the surrounding environment.

What is a bioreactor landfill?

A bioreactor landfill is a purpose built facility designed to accelerate the decomposition process of residual waste and maximise the capture of biogas yields for conversion into green electricity.

This is achieved by placing an extensive network of pipes through the waste and careful control of water, leachate recirculation, acid levels, and temperature and microbe levels in each bioreactor cell.

The rapid decomposition of the waste and biogas capture expedites the stabilisation of the waste and greatly reduces the escape of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere.

General rubbish collected in Sydney(metro) and Brisbane(metro) is sent to the Bioreactor landfill facility with the organic fraction converted into ‘green’ energy.

Veolia Environmental Service operates two bioreactor landfills inNSW and QLD.
