Veolia Mulwaree Trust

The Veolia Mulwaree Trust supports community projects and charities for the benefit of the community of the former Mulwaree Shire Council area in Southern NSW or a community within a council area which immediately adjoined Mulwaree. Trust funds are generated from Veolia’s Woodlawn Bioreactor near Tarago. In the past four years the Veolia Mulwaree Trust has proudly contributed more than $2.7 million toward community projects supporting hospitals, schools, charities, sport and recreation facilities and community groups. Stroke of Art

Almost 50,000 Australians suffer from a stroke each year, of which one third die within twelve months. With the aging population, this figure is set to rise to a staggering 74,000 Australians dying from stroke by the year 2017 if nothing is done in the interim. In 2003, Veolia sponsored the inaugural Stroke of Art exhibition and charity auction dinner at the NSW Parliament House. Since 2003, A Stroke of Art has raised over $175,000 which has been donated to the National Stroke Foundation to continue research into the effects of stroke.

Clean Up Antarctica

Our commitment to global citizenship and the preservation of important ecologically sensitive environments led Veolia to combine resources with the Australian Antarctic Division (AAD) to initiate a programme of rehabilitation of the former waste sites in Antarctica. In the collaborative arrangement, Veolia provided expertise and direct funding, in the form of 240 purpose-built waste containers to return the hazardous waste to Australia for disposal. The abandoned Thala Valley Landfill located at Casey Station was partially remeditated in 2004 with the waste returned to Hobart, Tasmania for treatment prior to secured disposal. Further remediation is expected to be accommodated in AAD’s 2007/08 budget.

Menzies Centre – Diabetes Research

Recent figures show that seven per cent of Australian adults suffer from the condition Type 2 diabetes, with half of these cases being undiagnosed. Some studies have suggested that the early stages of diabetes start to occur in childhood. The Menzies Research Institute is taking a lead role in research focusing on the prevention of cardiovascular disease and diabetes in a study called the Childhood Determinants of Adult Health. The study is following-up 8,498 school children who participated in a national health and fitness survey in 1985, named the Australian Schools Health and Fitness Survey. The Institute has become a leading centre for population health research, with a global reputation in epidemiology and expanding roles in genetics and clinical epidemiology as well as biomedical research. In 2003, Veolia (Tasmania) commenced its sponsorship of the Menzies Research Institute, to support their excellent work into diabetes research.

Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service

The Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service provides emergency relief for people who require urgent transportation to hospitals across the Hunter and Mid North Coast of NSW. The Rescue Helicopter Service mostly assists the victims of motor vehicle and motorbike accidents, however the service is also used to transport people requiring urgent organ transplantation, and other severe medical problems. The service also lends support for search and rescue missions with the NSW Police and Ambulance Services. With 32 years experience, the Rescue Helicopter saves close to 2000 people each year. Veolia Environmental Services, along with Veolia Water have partnered with Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service through primary funding, as well as through a voluntary salary deduction program for all staff.

Scouts Australia

Veolia Environnement and Scouts Australia have joined to form a very worthwhile partnership which will change the lives and futures of many Indigenous children and the communities within which they live, across remote regions throughout Australia. The partnership, entitled National Indigenous Scouting Programme seeks to help foster leadership amongst the youth within aboriginal communities through the establishment of scouting. Supported by the both the State and Federal Governments, the program has already commenced in Queensland. The support from Veolia Environnement, through Veolia Foundation will enable Scouts Australia Development Officers to assist elders to introduce scouting in indigenous communities across Australia. The core objective of the project is to develop a culturally specific leadership and community development program for young Indigenous people in isolated communities with emphasis on strong Indigenous ownership, and strong links to Indigenous social and cultural life and traditional Scouting.
