Veolia helps Clean Up Australia Day

Veolia has been a major sponsor of Clean Up Australia Day since 1990. On March 2nd 2008, Veolia hosted over 12 corporate clean up sites and gathered over 500 volunteers nationally to get their hands dirty and clean up!

Sunday March 2nd saw over 800 000 Australian Volunteers turn up to local waterways, parks, schools, and other community areas in the efforts to clean up and properly dispose of illegally dumped rubbish.

The emphasis of this years clean up campaign was on the reduction of plastic water bottles as well as single use plastic bags.

“What is now needed is a recycling system that operates in places away from home where much of this waste is being created. Offering a refund to consumers for their drink can or bottles would significantly improve recycling rates and reduce the amount of rubbish being dumped in the environment,” Mr Kiernan said.

In Sydney, over 50 Veolia staff and local volunteered at Bicentennial Park, West Pymble. Joined by distingushed guests, Dr. Brendan Nelson, Federal leader of the Opposition, Mr Barry O'Farrell, NSW Leader of the Opposition, and founder of Clean Up Australia, Mr Ian Kiernan.

Veolia teams also held a clean up at Sandringham Yacht Club, in Victoria and Simpsons Playground in QLD.
