Innovative Design Incorporated into New Cell at Horsley Park

Staff at Veolia Environmental Services Horsley Park complex recently celebrated the completion of construction activities for landfill Cell number 8; now allowing the continuation of tipping operations for a number of years to come.

Cell 8 has an excavated footprint of approximately 3 hectares and waste capacity close to 1 million cubic metres, allowing it to be the largest of all seven landfill cells on site. All design work, project management and construction contract documentation was prepared by the Technical and Engineering team based at Rosehill, with external consultants providing the construction site with quality assurance.

A vital factor when designing and constructing a waste cell is ensuring that the waste system encompasses an effective barrier and drainage system to prevent leachate migration from polluting surrounding groundwater and surface water.

The new Cell incorporates a vertical leachate riser for extraction of contaminated water. This innovation was designed in-house and was constructed using concrete and polyethylene plastic; it was then integrated into the liner system to enable long term operability. Additionally, horizontal gas extraction systems developed at Veolia’s Woodlawn and Ti-Tree facilities have been used as a template for the installation of a similar system at Horsley Park; this will enable the destruction of a greater percentage of landfill gas generated from decomposing waste to be sustainably recovered.

It was imperative that the excavation, cell construction and implementation was precise in its planning to prevent waste space from running short before Cell 8’s opening. Excavation work commenced in late 2006, and the new cell was equipped to accept landfill waste by mid August 2009. Congratulations to all at Horsley Park for achieving this milestone.
