Ti Tree Bioenergy Lights up Ipswich

The Ti Tree bioreactor is a joint venture between Veolia Environmental Services and JJ Richards. Planning for the facility commenced in 1999 and after a lengthy approval process, the facility commenced accepting waste in June 2003.

A key component of the bioreactor design is to use the methane content of the landfill gas emitted, to generate green renewable electricity.

After two years of planning and construction, the goal was realised in August 2008 with the commissioning of two 1.1 MW generators at the Ti Tree site. These generators have enabled Ti Tree to export 1027MWH's into the local power grid via the Ebenezer sub-station, reducing the requirement for electricity generated from coal or other non-renewable resources.

The current installation can produce enough 'green' electricity to power 2,500 homes and in terms of greenhouse gas reduction is equivalent to:

  • Removing 20,000 cars from our roads or,
  • Planting 300,000 trees

A third unit is set for installation in October 2009, with a total of 10 units planned over 10 years.

Generation of 'green' electricity is a significant milestone in the facility's commitment to sustainable development, and both partners are justifiably proud of this world class installation.
