Veolia Announced as Finalist in the UNAA World Environment Day Awards

Veolia Environmental Services was recently named a finalist in the United Nations Association of Australia’s (UNAA) World Environment Day Awards, under the category best specific environmental initiative for its Woodlawn Eco-Precinct.

Located 250kms south of Sydney, near Goulburn in NSW, Veolia’s Woodlawn Eco-Precinct was previously a copper, lead and zinc open cut mine. Since this time, the void has become an in-situ bioreactor, and the surrounding area is fast becoming one of Australia’s largest eco-precincts.

The Woodlawn Eco-Precinct is comprised of four key elements that include; the Woodlawn Bioreactor, Woodlawn Alternative Sorting and Processing (WASP) facility, Woodlawn Aquaculture facility and the Woodlawn Education Centre.

Woodlawn offers a significant alternative for the resource recovery and disposal of putrescible waste in New South Wales by utilising technologies that are used by our Veolia counterparts around the world. The bioreactor facility extracts green electricity from what would otherwise be waste material. In addition to Veolia’s WASP facility that is designed to extract reusable materials, to produce compost for the on-going mine rehabilitation on-site; the primary objective to transform degradable land back into productive land.

Award winners will be announced at the Grand Hyatt Melbourne, on Friday 4th June 2010, presented by Rob Gell- Environmentalist and President of Greening Australia.
