Veolia Environmental Services participates in the Federal Governments Energy Efficiency Opportunities Program

In response to the Federal Governments Energy Efficiency Opportunities Program, Veolia Environmental Services has recently released its 2009 Energy Efficiency Report.

The program aims to encourage large businesses that use more than 0.5 petajoules (PJ) of energy per year to improve their energy efficiency and requires these businesses to recognize, evaluate and report on opportunities where they can attain energy savings.

Veolia identified 3 opportunities of significance including:

· Machinery Optimization at Waste Transfer Station.

Rather than standard power factor correction, machine specific Awareness Reduction Units were trialed on specific high energy-using machinery at Veolia’s Clyde Transfer Terminal in Sydney, which receives domestics and commercial waste and compacts it into shipping containers for transport to a waste treatment facility. Results so far have shown a saving of over 700GJ per year of electricity.

· Reducing Idling in Waste Collection Trucks.

Idling trucks waste over 3.6 liters of diesel fuel every hour, Veolia prepared education material for our waste collection truck drivers with tips on reducing idling and showing the amount of fuel, money and greenhouse gas emissions could be avoided.

At our Hobart waste collection depot, which was used as a representative site, a reduction in idling of 10 minutes per day per truck will save over 5,000 liters of diesel per year, equating to 220GJ reduction in energy use.

· Route Optimization

Veolia has recently implemented a Paperless Truck System in all our waste collection trucks. The system includes GPS and automatic scheduling of on-call bin collection jobs. From this the route data can be analyzed in order to identify inefficiencies and improve route planning, which will consequently lead to fuel savings as well as better service for customers.

The requirements for the program are set out in the Energy Efficiency Opportunities legislation, that commenced the 1st of July 2006. Veolia continues to support this energy saving initiative and presents customers with a second Energy Saving Opportunities Report that is available here.
