Resource Recovery and Recycling
Veolia Environmental Services has a commitment to the environment which goes beyond short term waste collection and resource recovery. Our aim is to turn waste into a resource. Yet, we know we are only one part of the equation, and as such, Veolia aims to develop meaningful relationships and programs with the broader community which seek to drive higher awareness; better recycling practices and as a result, higher levels of sustainable living.

Veolia has a vast range of resource recovery facilities which we own and operate across Australia. Our focus is to develop the future blueprint for long-term innovative waste management by investing in a diverse portfolio of holistic resource recovery technologies and processes.
Supplementary to our network of technologies and services, Veolia also provides educational support to promote recycling and reduce waste-related environmental impacts. This includes our Getting Wise about Waste commercial training and education program. We also deliver support on topics such as recycling, the lifecycle of waste, and how to minimise the consumption of resources.
Adding Value to Green Waste Through Controlled Composting
Source-separated organic food and green waste is processed at our In-Vessel Composting Facility, Natural Recovery Systems (NRS) in Victoria. NRS receives waste to produce AS4454 certified organic growth medium for sale back into the Melbourne market. In addition to compost, NRS derives Emission Reduction Units which are sold into the Australian and International Carbon markets.

Better Resource Recovery for a Better Environment
Veolia Environmental Services operates a number of Materials Recovery Facilities (MRF’s) which sort recyclable materials, e.g. paper, glass, metals and plastics, collected from municipal collections. The recyclable material arrives from council collections and is sorted using mechanical conveyers and teams of sorters who identify and remove potential contaminants.
The sorted recyclables are then forwarded on to a number of material recyclers who convert the material back into usable products.

Australia’s First E-waste Recycling Service
One of the emerging priority waste streams which Veolia has targeted worldwide is electronic waste. In early 2005, Veolia formed a venture with Sims Group Limited, to develop the first Australia-wide electronic waste collection and recovery business, Sims E-Recycling. Drawing on the significant synergies within the broader Sims Group and global Veolia entities, the venture provides true “end-of-life” recycling services for all types of e-waste (computers, televisions, printers, faxes, copiers, mobile phones, laptops, servers etc).
